I photographed this scene on my spring 2017 backpacking trip to the Colorado Plateau. While wandering the wash, I saw this broken Cottonwood tree against a beautiful cliff of desert varnish. What came to mind was the unbroken will of the tree to survive despite the main trunk being splintered. The title takes on a second meaning because this represents the first photo I took on my repaired Ebony camera after it was heavily damaged on my winter trip to Death Valley.
